William Gopallawa

William Gopallawa , MBE ( Sinhala : විලියම් ගොපල්ලව, Tamil : வில்லியம் கோப்பல்லாவ ) (17 September 1896 – 31 January 1981) was the last Governor-General of Ceylon from 1962 to 1972 and became the first (non-executive) President of Sri Lanka when Ceylon declared itself a republic in 1972 and changed its name to Sri Lanka. Until 1972, Ceylon was a Commonwealth realm with Queen Elizabeth II as the head of state and Queen of Ceylon. He served as Governor-General during the tenure of different governments headed by Sirimavo Bandaranaike of the SLFP and Dudley Senanayake of the UNP .

William Gopallawa ( September 17 1897 - January 31 1981 ) was the last Governor General of Ceylon ( 1962 - 1972 ) as Sri Lanka was known prior to 1972, and first President of Sri Lanka when Ceylon became Sri Lanka and adopted a Republican Constitution. 1972 — Prior to that year, it was a Dominion Republic owing allegiance to the Queen of England. Before assuming office as the president he served in many positions in the government from Municipal Commissioner Kandy during WW-II where he acquitted himself for efficiency during the floods. He was known as an austere, nonpartisan and statesmanlike figure who commanded the respect of all political parties. He was the first to establish a spartan Buddhist Shrine room at the Queen's House.

He became the Governor-General of Ceylon in 1962, and served until 1972. He was known as an austere, nonpartisan and statesmanlike figure. When Ceylon became the Republic of Sri Lanka in 1972, Gopallawa became the President. He retired in 1978 when Prime Minister Junius Richard Jayewardene had the constitution changed to make the Presidency an elective position with more powers, and Jayewerdene was elected President. William's son Monty Gopallawa was also involved in politics.
